Thyroid Panel Cost: TSH, T4 and T3 Test Pricing
What affects the cost of a thyroid panel and how to compare TSH-only testing with multi-marker panels.
The cost of a thyroid panel depends mainly on which markers are included. A TSH-only test and a panel containing TSH, T4, T3-related measurements, or thyroid antibodies are different products. Add any blood-draw or service fee before comparing totals. Mito publishes the current price and contents of its TSH, T4, T3 uptake, and free thyroxine index panel on the product page.
What changes the cost of a thyroid panel?
The label “thyroid panel” does not identify one universal marker set. Price can change with:
- The number and type of measurements. TSH, total or free T4, total or free T3, T3 uptake, free thyroxine index, and thyroid antibodies answer different questions.
- Blood-draw fees. A collection charge may be added once per visit.
- Ordering and review services. Test authorization or a clinician review may be included or charged separately.
- Membership and insurance terms. A membership price, a public cash price, and an insurance-billed price are not equivalent.
Compare the included measurements first and the final price second.
TSH test versus thyroid panel
The American Thyroid Association describes TSH as the initial test for thyroid function in many situations. It also explains that free T4 or a free T4 index can provide additional information when assessed with TSH. That does not make every larger panel necessary for every person, and it does not make a standalone TSH test equivalent to a multi-marker panel.
If the intended order is TSH alone, compare it with other TSH-only products using the TSH test cost guide. If the intended order includes several thyroid measurements, compare products with the same marker list.
Which thyroid markers are included?
Read the product contents rather than relying on “basic,” “complete,” or “full” in the name. Common measurements include thyroid-stimulating hormone, free T4, and free T3. Antibody panels are separate products and should not be assumed to be included in a hormone panel.
A product that uses total T4 and T3 uptake to calculate a free thyroxine index is also not the same as a product that directly measures free T4. The exact assay names belong in the price comparison.
How to compare thyroid panel prices
Use this checklist:
- Write down the exact markers in the intended order.
- Match products that contain those same measurements.
- Add blood-draw, authorization, and service fees.
- Check whether a membership is required for the displayed price.
- Confirm state availability and whether interpretation is included.
