What does a ferritin test measure?
A ferritin test measures the protein that stores iron in the body, which makes it a practical readout of your iron stores. Of the routine blood tests, a low ferritin is the finding that points most specifically to iron deficiency.
A high ferritin is less straightforward. Because inflammation raises ferritin on its own, an elevated result needs iron studies, such as transferrin saturation, and inflammation context before it can be read as iron overload.
What does an hsCRP test measure?
An hsCRP test measures C-reactive protein, a protein the liver releases in response to inflammation, using an assay sensitive enough to quantify low concentrations. CRP rises within hours of inflammation and falls quickly once it resolves.

When testing both is genuinely useful
The pairing earns its place when ferritin comes back high. A raised hsCRP alongside a raised ferritin suggests the ferritin elevation may be inflammatory rather than iron overload. A normal hsCRP makes an inflammatory explanation less likely and shifts attention toward iron studies.
When ferritin is low, running both adds little: low ferritin already points to iron deficiency, and hsCRP would not change that reading. A normal ferritin is a different story. If hsCRP is elevated, inflammation can push a truly deficient ferritin up into the normal range, so a mid-range number in an inflamed person does not rule out low iron stores on its own.
