Your guide to the FIB-4 Index.

What is the FIB-4 Index?

The FIB-4 Index is a non-invasive scoring system that estimates liver fibrosis by assessing liver function and potential liver damage, especially in individuals with chronic liver diseases like hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). It calculates a score based on age, liver enzyme levels (ALT and AST), and platelet count, making it a useful tool in clinical settings to help identify individuals who may need more intensive liver assessment.

What does it assess?

The FIB-4 Index helps evaluate the likelihood of liver fibrosis, particularly in individuals at risk for or managing chronic liver disease. It is a useful early indicator of liver health, allowing physicians to assess the degree of liver scarring without invasive procedures like a liver biopsy.

How do I optimize my FIB-4 Index results?

Excess body weight, particularly visceral fat, increases the risk of liver fibrosis. Adopting a balanced diet rich in vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains, combined with regular physical activity, can reduce liver fat accumulation and fibrosis risk. Excessive alcohol can significantly contribute to liver damage and scarring, leading to higher FIB-4 scores. Reducing or abstaining from alcohol is one of the most effective ways to lower the risk of liver fibrosis and support liver function. Certain nutrients, such as vitamin E and omega-3 fatty acids, have shown potential in supporting liver health. Additionally, antioxidants from fruits and vegetables can help reduce liver inflammation. Avoiding processed foods high in sugar, trans fats, and additives can also be beneficial.

What does a high and low FIB-4 Index mean?

Elevated FIB-4 scores may indicate advanced liver fibrosis or cirrhosis. A higher score signals an increased likelihood of significant liver scarring, often prompting further evaluation by a specialist or additional testing. A low FIB-4 score suggests minimal or no liver fibrosis, which generally indicates healthier liver function and a lower risk of advanced liver disease.
